Factors That Impede Cooling Efficiency
- Coolant should be checked regularly (approx. every 3-4 weeks) with the engine cold. The coolant level should be about 2.5cm or 1" below the filler neck. On vehicles, with a coolant recovery tank, the coolant should be visible between the markings on the tank.
- Fan belt condition should be checked every 3 months, tighten loose belts , worn, or cracked belts, should be, replaced. The newer SERPENTINE belts are self adjusting and last approx. 5 years under normal driving conditions.
- Clean the front of the radiator of all leaves and other material each time you check the coolant level.
- If coolant needs to be added a mixture of 50/50 water/anti-freeze should be used at all times, with the exception of extreme temperatures.
- Check all radiator and heater hoses for leaks, swelling, or cracking. Tighten or replace as needed.
- Check the radiator cap, gasket and sealing surfaces for any wear.
- Every 2 years the coolant should be flushed from the engine and replaced with a new mixture. This is done by draining the radiator at the drain on the bottom of the radiator or removing the lower radiator hose. If the engine has drain plugs open those to speed draining. Close all drains and refill with clean water. (a flushing agent may also be used) run the engine up to operating temperature. Shut engine off, and allow it to cool, drain system, flush system with fresh water until it runs clear. refill with a fresh mixture of anti-freeze and water. Run engine up to operating temperature. Allow to cool and check coolant level. CAUTION Anti-freeze, and a mixture of anti-freeze and water, has a sweet taste, that can be deadly, to animals. Avoid spillage and dispose of used mixtures at a recycling depot.
- The thermostat, regulates the water temperature and needs only to be replaced if it fails. It is located at the housing on top of the engine where the top radiator hose is attached. Always replace it with a new thermostat of the same temperature rating as the one that you remove.
